sede-bari-chiesa-san-nicola-ispa-cnr-istituto-scienze-produzioni-alimentariThe Bari section was formed by the merger of two institutes: ITEM, the Institute of Toxins and Mycotoxins from Plant Parasites and ISOI, the Institute of Industrial Horticulture, both located in Bari. ITEM was founded in 1980, and had previously been a CNR Research Centre for toxins and systemic plant parasites and since 1970 had been working out of the Plant Pathology department at Bari University. ISOI was founded in 1992, and had previously been the Industrial Horticultural Research Centre and since 1972 had been working out of the Plant Production Sciences department at Bari University.

Staff currently working at the Bari branch are as follows: 2 research directors, 8 senior researchers, 23 researchers, 11 technical aides, 4 administrative staff, Research activity at the Bari section is supported by 2 fixed term contract workers, 8 research grant recipients, 5 project contract workers and 7 research doctorate candidates. Contributions to the section’s research activities also come from 2 freelance workers and a few volunteers and undergraduates.

Research activities are concentrated on the following: improving the quality and safety of foodstuffs; research into micro-organisms of agri-food interest and their bio-active metabolites; sustainable production of fresh and processed horticultural produce; and research into the nutritional factors and suitability for processing of horticultural produce.
